Artist Statement

Guided by her old soul and humbly following in the footsteps of the classical surreal master’s technique of 1920’s such us Remedios Varo and Leanora Carrington , Rusul constantly challenges herself to produce work that is both expressive and emotional. Her emphasis on storytelling via vivid expression of dreams is central to her work, with focus on symbolism that often appears in her paintings to show the struggle of life, hope success, and failure. Rusul’s work aims to be a mirror of emotions, using different imagined characters as humans and creatures as well as animals, insects, and other objects, that often come to us in dreams. Her form of symbolism creates a magical environment that challenges the viewer to use their imagination to interpret each painting for themselves. She is always creating a certain composition to complete the scene and makes it easier for the viewer to engage with her work. Rusul appreciates antiquity in all forms and frequently merges eastern and western cultural concepts and mythologies, often using this as a bridge to her dreamscapes. Rusul primarily leverages oil on canvas or Masonite as her primary medium, creating a warm color palette that brings a vivid experience to her audience.
